GREEN WATER
Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) larviculture with VitaBloom® Green Water showed similar larvae survival, dry weight and length when compared to larviculture with green water technique with live Nannochloropsis sp. Meagre larvae showed adequate skeletal development, revealing a lower percentage of skeletal malformations and with lower number of individuals with affected phenotype.
Larvae survival post stress challenge (transport) was remarkably higher, 36%, when VitaBloom® Green Water was used in green water technique when compared with the same technique using live microalgae.
THE BLOOM OF THE PRODUCT
VitaBloom® products were developed during the ALLARVAE
project (ALG-01-0247-FEDER-069971) that aimed to design sustainable and target-specific products for marine fish larviculture, throught the combination of microalgae and
probiotics. Microalgae are optimal nutritional resources for marine fish and live feed. Probiotics are relevant water conditioners with a prophylactic character that can be applied in aquaculture to reduce the pathogen’s onset probability and improve larvae resistance to stress.
The probiotic bacteria occupy the environmental niche where other potentially harmful bacteria can proliferate. The probiotics metabolites inhibit relevant aquaculture pathogens and remove ammonia from the system water. The main challenges in aquaculture are its sustainability and health management, which have been tackled through product development with the combination of microalgae and probiotics.
