Necton’s history is essentially based on creative entrepreneurship that led to two types of business: Microalgae and Traditional Sea Salt.
Companhia Portuguesa de Culturas Marinhas SA. was founded in 1997 with the aim of realising a microalgae production project that had emerged at the Superior School of Biotechnology of the Catholic University of Portugal. It then began to develop in the field of marine biotechnology, promoting technologies for the production of microalgae on an industrial scale. Later, it entered the production and sale of traditional sea salt;
So we are divided into two autonomous business units: the Microalgae Business Unit and the Traditional Sea Salt Business Unit.
Necton’s mission is to bring to market innovative products and services resulting from scientific and technological marine knowledge. Our vocation is based on the integrated and sustainable development of salt marshes through the production of traditional sea salt, microalgae and the use of other resources from this environment.

For thousands of years, mankind has been gathering salt from the sea or finding it on land. For most of our existence, salt was a scarce, rare, and difficult product to transport. Salt was literally a hidden treasure in the sea!

The production of traditional sea salt and Flor de Sal follows a unique methodology that combines tradition with modern management processes, innovation and quality to obtain excellent products. Thus, the salt harvest is carried out in a traditional and ancient way. In this way, the salt reaches all consumers, natural, healthy and as nature gives it to us.

The Phytobloom brand represents both literally and figuratively an explosion of phytoplankton.
The Phytobloom’s product line consists of a range of microalgae concentrates (phytoplankton) marketed to aquaculture hatcheries for marine and shellfish, aquariums and research centers.
