Premium Microalgae Ingredients for Cosmetics, Nutraceuticals, and Aquaculture
The PremiumAlgae project aims to revolutionize microalgae valorisation through sustainable biorefinery processes and the “zero waste” concept. The main objective is to maximize the potential of the biomass and, through an innovative strategy, recover the production supernatants (currently discarded), transforming them into valuable resources.
The strategy focuses on the development of four new high-value-added functional ingredients: extracts rich in fucoxanthin and phycobiliproteins (from biomass) and exopolysaccharides and extracellular vesicles (from supernatants). These ingredients are intended for specific applications in the nutraceutical, cosmetic, and aquaculture industries.
To that end, a consortium of excellence will work to optimize scalable extraction processes and to validate the bioactivity and stability of the products through in vitro and in vivo assays. The project will culminate in the creation of commercial prototypes, thus promoting the circular economy in the blue biotechnology sector.
