The CHLOROFIT project aims to develop an innovative and sustainable nutraceutical solution for challenges of metabolic health, based on chlorophyll derivatives from microalgae. The main objective is to unlock the potential of microalgae as a natural source of bioactive compounds with anti-obesity and antidiabetic potential.
The strategy focuses on optimizing microalgae strains and cultivation conditions to increase chlorophyll productivity, while developing scalable biorefinery processes for the extraction and transformation of chlorophyll into bioactive derivatives. The project will also integrate digital photobioreactor models based on artificial intelligence to improve process efficiency, predictability, and scalability.
These advances will support the development of two new high-value functional ingredients, designed for nutraceutical applications such as capsules and functional beverages. Their bioactivity, safety, toxicity, and stability will be validated through in vitro and in vivo assays, using zebrafish models.
By combining biotechnology, biorefinery, digital innovation, and scientific validation, CHLOROFIT will contribute to the development of effective, safe, and sustainable nutraceutical ingredients, strengthening innovation in the blue biotechnology sector.
